Graham Repulski - My Color is Red - 7

Labels: Big School
Review by: Oli Saunders

Looks like I’m a bit late to be joining the Graham Repulski fan club, what with James Pacanowski having reviewed four of his releases in the last two years. But having joyfully stumbled across this 7” in the ‘for review’ section on CZ, I am now fully on board and unsure how I managed to miss out on him until now.

Any fan of Guided By Voices cannot fail to notice the similarities, and any review of Graham’s work probably cannot fail to comment on it. But this 7” manages to take all the best bits of GBV, avoid any filler (admittedly not too difficult over 4 songs), AND be original enough to not just be written off as a copycat band. Sweet Jesus. ‘Everyone Likes My Three Dollar Shirt’ is the pick of the bunch, being both an excellent track title and song. The beauty of simple and repetitive indie rock recorded on a 4-track is here to behold.

Probably the best record I’ve heard so far this year. Lo-fi, DIY (check out the cut out hearts with felt background), perfect.
