Two nautically-themed tracks in half an hour and the band is called ‘War Iron’. This gonna be doom, right? Right. Gnarly stuff at that, with not a six-string guitar in sight and the weight instead carried by two bassplayers, a la Palehorse. The crackly thrum really works well, surging forward like a mudslide and carrying with it pounding drums and rasping, catarrh-clotted vocals along with so much other ballast, wreckage and uprooted vegetation. Comparisons can be made with the likes of Noothgrush, Conan or UK upstarts Sea Bastard and while some elements could do with being ironed (chortle) out a bit more thoroughly (the fast section a few minutes into ‘Inch Cape’ really doesn’t work so well, for example, and there are a couple of other faltering moments throughout) I’d say this is nonetheless a pretty promising start from a band dragging their dense, mucosal sludge in what can only be described as the right direction.
