Burning Love - Rotten Thing To Say - CD (2012)

Labels: Southern Lord
Review by: Alex Deller

Must admit: previous Burning Love releases have always struck me as solid if a little unremarkable. Good for a listen or two, but never something I’ve returned to too many times. This one, however, this one’s a proper fucking beast, wildly gouging, biting and breaking whatever’s in its path with no thought for the time when the red mist might’ve lifted and someone else has to stop by to mop up the big shitty mess they’ve left behind. ‘Rotten Thing To Say’, see, is positively turbocharged, roaring into life like a pumped-up, ‘Feel The Darkness’-era Poison Idea while taking in the raw shitkicking of Zeke and cribbing a smidgeon of Turbonegro’s weighty bombast as if the mix weren’t quite potent enough already. Everything sounds amazingly thick and burly while frontman Chris Colohan’s lyrics are blunt yet painfully eloquent, the chap snarlingly dismantling pigs n’ punks with equal gusto and, in ‘Karla’, offering something that’s equally effective as a dark study in human predation or certified rock n’ roll barnstormer. Phew.
