Rites of Spring - demo - 10

Labels: Dischord
Review by: Joe Caithness

I was standing in the street talking to some smokers the other day outside a gig and someone said “if you don’t like Rites of Spring, I’m sorry but you are a fucking idiot”.

Guy’s got a point. (see what I did there?)

So Dischord are going back through the vaults to find new stuff to put out. I’m not bothered, anything that gets Rites of Spring to a new generation makes me really happy. This is a demo recording very nicely remastered. All these songs are on the LP, but it’s different performances and some of the songs are a bit slower, which does in fact put a new spin on things. This is from before they had played shows and I am guessing this is why the vocals are less OTT, again I kinda like that, as you can hear the lyrics a bit better. You do have to sift through all the studio fuckery between the tracks, which won’t appeal to people marching around town trying not to roll on the floor crying in a Sainsbury’s local. This is also a ten inch, which some people hate, but I kinda like, they fit in backpacks better.

Here’s to hoping that this combined with the Moss Icon and Hated vinyl discogs (lolz Hated discog, yeah right, see you in 2040) influences a new generation of depressed punk fans to make music for me to listen to.
