OK, so this band are like huge now. They went from being a pretty average melodic hardcore band to a pretty good one quite fast, and are now like the biggest punk band around or something. Is the hype to be believed? Well I’m a cynical old (not actually old at all) wanker and I actually listened to the song they put up “Head In the Ceiling Fan” because someone said they had gone all shoegazey and I wanted to go “no, lol, this is just crap rock”… I listened to it about 5 times to work out why I didn’t like it, but then realized I was listening to it because I liked it. I was confused because it sounded more like Cave In or Hum than Gorilla Biscuits or Lifetime, and the production was actually very good. In actually that track was a bit of a bluff by the band, as it’s by far the only song anything like that (but can we have more on the next records please?).
OK, so I actually went from wanting to hate on this band to listening to them almost every day. I discovered as time went that fellow self professed uber-punx were racking up hundreds of plays on their Last FM accounts, and I have had the “Title Fight” talk with a few different people after 4 or 5 beers now. So what’s this record like? Yeah it’s good, it’s not grabbing me as quickly as Shed, their first record, as it doesn’t really have that Lifetime/Saves the Day hyperspeed pop punk thing going on. They seem to be a band shifting into their own territory, and I have a feeling their next output will be very different to the early 7″s.
OK.
Yeah this will probably still end on my top 10 for the year. You can pick up a coloured version for 50,000 on ebay too!
