I had a lot of people talk excitedly about this band to me in recent months and I wasn’t really sure what to expect off the back of the name. Maybe time spent reading this website warped my mind into expecting every band with a name like this to be a screamo band. Anyway, I think it’s fair to say of Pedals On Our Pirate Ships you’ll know if you like them or not pretty much instantly, with a large part of that being your tolerance for the sweeter end of pop-punk. They sort of sound like a scrappier and faster Rentals with some three-chord pop-punk influence along the lines of mid-90s Lookout! output with dual vocals. I hear some Screeching Weasel going on, but that’s just my ears.
It’s all executed very well and I know several people who would go absolutely wild for this. Unfortunately, the guy’s voice just leaves me cold and I really struggle to connect with it because of that. There’s nothing wrong with this record at all, it just isn’t really for me. I’d say this is worth listening to if you enjoy the aforementioned reference points or perhaps some Plan It X releases such as The Bananas and The Max Levine Ensemble. Give it a try.
