The Love Below - Every Tongue Shall Caress - LP (2012)

Labels: A389
Review by: Alex Deller

This is a right funny onion and make no mistake. Musically speaking we’re in fairly familiar A389 territory: dense, burly hardcore with a whiff of sludge that takes its cues from the likes of Integrity, Damnation AD and Pulling Teeth. So far so normal until their singer “” the improbably-named Jerry Wayne Woolbright Jr “” highdives into the fray, his voice a stretched, wailing jabber that’s part-way between temper tantrum and nervous breakdown. This delivery kinda knocks you off kilter and, given the genre’s preference for rote bellicose roars, actually comes as a pleasant if vaguely unsettling surprise. Said vocals help propel things along with a manic energy that’s hard not to get caught up in, particularly if the idea of Eyehategod and Blood For Blood soundtracking a turbulent night in the Bobcat Goldthwait household happens to tickle your fancy. I’d hesitate to say this is a great record, but it’s a good ‘un and at least gets a handful of extra bonus points for straying from the norm a little.
