Marine Electric - Restrained Joy - LP (2012)

This one has been on my list for a while and multiple listens later leads me to say that The Marine Electric play solid but unspectacular melodic punk rock with a bit of a 90s influence thrown in. It’s not a bad record but at times there is an almost laboured sound to the songs – full of effort and workmanlike but not free enough to really get my attention. The first song struggles to get out of first gear even as the three vocalists come in and I get a similar feeling on some of the other songs on here. There is just something missing and they don’t quite have the songwriting to elevate this into much more than solid territory. I also have a nagging in my head saying that this sounds like Polar Bear Club albeit minus the cartoonish elements. Still, it’s better than mediocre and with more songs of the calibre of “Sea Fever” and “Murder Mile” these guys could be on to something.
