The term shoegaze for me always brings to mind 90s bands like Ride, Slowdive and Lush. I always think back to Slough Festival in 1991 when they got the main British shoegazers at the time to descend on Slough. I just looked it up and was reminded that Chapterhouse, Curve and Revolver played that day too although Lush weren’t on the bill. They even let Thousand Yard Stare play to ensure that Slough was most definitely in the house. Somehow The Mock Turtles sneaked onto the bill too. I wonder how that happened. This coming together of such bands in Slough was pretty exciting for me and my friends particularly as we could get the 353 bus all the way to Slough from home and drink cans of Strongbow Super on the way there. The following year was much less exciting and featured Jesus Jones and Utah Saints amongst others. However, it did have Senseless Things so there was no way we were going to miss it. I don’t think there was a 3rd Slough Festival.

I almost forgot I was meant to be writing a review there. This is two songs by a new London band doing a bit of an indie pop and shoegaze thing and there is at least one bloke from Wooderson involved. It’s very good too. The melodic vocals and harmonies give this a nice poppy feel and I would think they aren’t against a bit of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. The first song is led by male vocals and blends some really nice boy/girl interchanging vocals. The slower “North” is led by more dreamy female vocals and is quite stunning. Plenty of potential here and both songs are really good. I want to hear a lot more from Night Flowers.
