Ferox are a pretty elusive lot actually. If you look them up on Last FM you’ll find bands as diverse as: hardcore techno, Swedish nationalistic RAC/folk, horror rock, death metal (obviously), bass music and anarcho-punk.
And of course they are none of them. This particular Ferox start off remarkably like dad-goth heroes The Mission. Which is quite welcome oddly??? I can’t remember the last time I heard a new (retro) goth band that wasn’t either macho sexist EBM or wretched pop-punk in eyeliner.
What you get after that is a bit of PiL, a bit of Jarboe and a monologue song with ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ over it. Pretty much anything you’d want if you drink in that goth pub in your city.
Joking aside though this is actually really good. It’s a really solid EP of songs and the lyrics are not too overwrought. The modern production and absence of cheap synths makes it sound surprisingly relevant. Are we not due a new-romantic/goth-rock revival anyway?
And it would be unfair not to point out the genuinely gorgeous package this came in. All the way down to the Victorian wax stamp closure. Really impressive.
