Gave this one a whirl because Failure were mentioned as a RIYL. While I was never a truly besotted fan of Ken Andrews and pals, they are at least an interesting point of reference and certainly more so than Sparta or ATD-I, who were also namedropped. Admittedly, things start iffily. You get two minutes of pointless instrumental racket akin to Drive Like Jehu having a rare bad idea. Then they get better, the band cranking out a hazy, choppy brand of post-hardcore that sounds a bit like some obscure Goldenrod band gone Sonic Youth, or that time in the 00s when certain labels affiliated with this site were distroing releases by Life At These Speeds, Sicbay and Science Of Yabra. It’s with the track on side b (‘Night Clinics’) that they truly hit their stride, nailing a neat mix of hard riffage, shimmery tendencies and vague sniffs of ‘Everlong’. If you buy this, I recommend you listen to this side first. Repeatedly.
