This one was unlikely to fail. Personal Best is a new trio from Bristol featuring folk from Caves, Attack! Vipers! and Bedford Falls and they peddle some fuzzy indie rock with a 90s slant on this debut 12inch. Four fuzzed-up tunes with nice vocal interplay between Katie Gatt and Louise Hanman (who is on drums here). They ease you in here with the measured pace of poppy opener “Don’t Let Them Touch You” before the pace picks up. It’s hard not to think of Superchunk on the faster tracks, and it’s equally hard not to take the lyrics of “Conkers” literally – this one was right in my head after the first couple of listens. Super start with some smart songwriting on show.
