Adult Mom - Momentary Lapse Of Happily - LP (2015)

Labels: Tiny Engines
Review by: MH

Adult Mom put out a cassette last year called “Sometimes Bad Happens”. It was pretty fantastic and I played it to death. It was kind of bedroom-y indie pop and the lyrics had an edge that belied the loveliness of the melodies. Same again here. Stephanie Knipe’s light and airy vocals drift over fairly minimal arrangements. The softly, softly style of the music and vocals hides the more powerful, emotional and personal side of the lyrics as they sing lines like “I survive because I have died” or “I wanna fucking die” while telling personal tales and experiences, and covering themes including gender, sexuality and identity. I’m totally smitten by it. “Survival” is one of the best pop songs I will hear all year. It has a lovely chiming riff that rings through it and that line of “I survive because I have died” is stuck my head long after listening. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve played this album right through lately – mainly on my ipod or through the computer but the vinyl arrived this week and it sounds even better now. The warmth in Stephanie’s vocals is something else. Like I said, smitten.
