Exit Verse - st - LP (2014)

Labels: Damnably
Review by: Andy Malcolm

So Geoff Farina did a new band! Although this came out ages ago now. I wasn’t sure what to expect. The last Farina thing I listened to was “œNew Salt” with Dan Littleton and Luther Gray, and that was just some kind of mad jazz nonsense that flew right over my head. Luckily what we’re presented with here is a pretty straightforward rock record that makes vastly more sense to my failing senses. There’s also a member of Chisel on board (John Dugan), and that’s a pretty fair reference point. Exit Verse is 90s indie rockers having a crack at making catchy rock’n’roll music, it sounds pretty much like some random band you’d catch at the bar, where there’d be about 10 people watching and you’d just popped in for a beer, but for some odd reason they aren’t playing covers, and you have a pint and then man, yeah, you’re into it. It’s good, real good, and you’re tapping your foot and nodding and have a couple more beers, they hit a groove and are tight as fuck and are done and dusted without a word. This is a funny old album really, there’s nothing remarkable about it, it’s blue collar workmanship, smartly executed and with years and years of musical smarts gelling together to create a deftly crafted album. It’s probably not going to be anyone’s favourite ever record but you can bet that the people involved had a heckuva time making it.
