Antorchas - Grass - 7

Some pretty nifty Mexican psych rock, this, recorded back in 1971 and available here and now for our greedy consumption. The lead track is the clear standout: driving, organ-heavy and coming off somewhere between the Human Beinz and Cream’s ‘Tales Of Brave Ulysses’. It shares its space with ‘Going Down’, which starts with a great drum/organ/vocal workout before becoming an odd, truncated lil mood piece that mopes around all too briefly and could really do with being quite a bit longer. Over on the flip we have ‘El Jardin Del Eden’ which starts in a pleasingly grubby ‘Foxy Lady’ fashion before calming down with some Eastern vibes and then changing tack again to become something mellow, drifty and a touch too fey to 100% engage me. Still, the stuff on the A-side is pretty much golden – just a shame that my copy came with a honking great scratch through the run-in groove. What the heck, Munster?!
