Druglord - New Day Dying - Download (2018)

Labels: Sludgelord
Review by: Alex Deller

Not gonna lie, I was winding up to give this one a proper kicking. I mean, a stoner rock band called Druglord? How much more on the nose can you be? Turns out, though, that my snark had to be directed elsewhere, because it’s actually pretty good. Opener ‘Blood And Body’ has these cool vocals that sound like Ozzy singing with a broken trachea and a cadence that, somewhat bizarrely, reminds me of ‘Madeleine-Mary’ by Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy. True enough things are very Electric Wizard, but the riffs are well-crafted and the drug-fugged bleariness seems genuine. Also in their favour is a weird-but-good line in melodies that, while owing a debt to Jus Oborn’s aforementioned crew, also recall the woozier end of Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots.
