Judging by the trippy artwork and handwritten track list, I thought this was going to be a throwaway “jam band” recording of the psychedelic variety. It’s not quite, although there is an improvisational quality to the music. The liner notes state that these tunes are “live takes with minimal edits/overdubs”. The result is not an ethereal freak-out, but a kind of energetic, stop-start instrumental rock. The trio consists of guitar, bass guitar, and drums. The sound is indebted to math rock, but there’s less chaos, less technical trickery, and more of a chilled jazz vibe. If you’ve yearned for a drop of Grant Green in your Don Caballero, you’ll enjoy this like I did. The release does have a demo feel, and I’d be interested to hear if they’ve stayed together since this was recorded in 2017.
