Middling music made by good musicians is always a bit of a bummer, and that’s what we have right here. It’s all pale, wan and gaunt, with spidery guitar lines spinning a silvery web in which to cradle Amber Thieneman’s sad, stately vocals. Low by way of True Widow filtered through a bygone 4AD prism initially seems like an appropriate description, only the harrowing sense of despondency has been filtered out and we’re left clutching an album’s worth of songs that content themselves with just being kind of nice.
