Maybe it’s the spirit-murdering tedium of lockdown getting to me, but I’m finding myself way more open to odd, burbling self-indulgence than I otherwise might have been. Here, by way of example, is a whole double LP by one Christian Nothaft; one which sees him tinker relentlessly and stretch strange ideas out to the point where time actually threatens to have some sort of meaning again. Arpeggios are looped and relooped into oblivion; things crackle, whir and chitter quietly to themselves and, every once in a while, broken, wheezing organs seem to occur. Skirting a fine line between cerebral and playful but refusing to come down hard on either side ‘Spontaneous Simplitude’ is a weird sort of success – enjoyably ambient yet intrusive enough that you’re forced to pay attention, and pitched at the exact midway point between Labradford and vintage Doctor Who.
