Camden - s/t - CD (2000)

Labels: Snapping Turtle
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Fancy some laid back indie rock? Got 6 tracks of that for you here. Camden mix up some influences like Jimmy Eat World and Christie Front Drive, Radiohead and Sunny Day Real Estate (now there’s a surprise) and come up with a 6 track EP of light, fluffy, Sunday afternoon tunes. And it’s Sunday afternoon, but this still seems to not quite make the grade. First song “In My New Year Heart” (eeeeeeeeeemo!) starts off very jangly and twinkly, but builds into slightly more rocking choruses (NOT EMO: note, emo songs do not feature choruses *joke*). “You, Little Tiger” initialises in a total CFD manner, very nice. I think there might be extra instrumentation here, it could definitely do with some violin or cello or something. There’s a moderate acoustic track, these things tend to work better with musicians you’re familiar with. By about the 5th song I stopped paying too much attention. It just flows by. All very nice, but not remarkable. And there are just 6 songs on here.

The vocals here are kinda odd, normally this sort of stuff has mumbles or whines, some ill judged screaming, or some boy who can’t sing right and thinks it’s cute. This guy sings, and really makes an effort to sing at times. Sometimes it’s really soft stuff a la CFD, but others it’s really at the forefront. His voice is ok though, can take a bit of getting used to though.

They could put a song on Emo Diaries and probably stand out. That’s the ballpark we’re playing in, and should be enough to let you know whether this is for you or not. I guess I could have written a much shorter review therefore. Never mind. One for kids who like their emo lazy and indie styled. They had some help recording it with Chris Rosenau from Pele, if that interests you.
