Elliott - False Cathedrals - CD (2000)

Labels: Revelation
Review by: Russell Opie

The new Elliott album! Firstly, I should mention that I don’t have their first record (US Songs) so I can’t say how this compares. But I think I might be tempted to purchase that album on hearing this beauty. The first thing that hit me is the packaging. The plastic jewel case is contained within a folded cardboard outer liner. Complete with gold spine and arty sketch on the front. It looks gorgeous.

And its quite appropriate that the packaging be so exquisite, because the music contained within is something special. Blissful, melancholic rock dripping with emotion. “Superstitions in Travel” epitomises that style perfectly. The vocals are heartfelt and honest. A very moving and emotional song indeed. Musically I don’t know of anything that I can accurately compare it to. Texas is the Reason would be the obvious choice, but that comparison is used far too often in band reviews these days!! Besides, I think it comes across as a bit more complicated and brooding than TITR as well though. Andy also mentioned that this sounds a bit like Jimmy Eat World too. So now you know.

But none of that matters since this is very impressive which ever way you look at it. Take “Calm Americans” for example. An elegant rocking track with a piano backing up the tuneful guitars. Wonderful! But its “Calvary Song” that I think is my favourite of all. Starts off slow, and builds as it continues, culminating on a powerful emotional high. Its rock through and through, with fast-ish paced guitars, bouncy rhythms and glorious vocals.

Yes oh yes!! Look basically, this is one of the most accomplished records I’ve heard this year. This album grabbed me and pulled me in completely. Listen to this and become emersed in twelve tracks of totally enchanting music.
