The Four Color Manual - Guardian For A Year - CD (1999)

Labels: Sudden Shame
Review by: Russell Opie

For those of you who don’t know I had a rather large order in at Subjugation and one of the CD’s I ordered was Beezewax. I can only assume that they were out of stock on it and they sent this instead. But I don’t mind, because TFCM play heartfelt emotional hardcore influenced indie-rock. And its good as well. In fact its better than good. Their lyrics just plain rule. This is really quite excellent.

Lyric of the album comes from the song For Montreal – “….the chicks don’t dig the new kids like they used to” – I just heard that lyric and thought YES! This album rules. Emotional vocal style that will pull you from every direction, and jangly guitars all wrapped up into a well produced package of rock! I have been playing this quite a bit, and it is probably the best thing that I got from my Subjugation order despite not actually ordering it! Praise be for small mercies.

Softly spoken words will get you thinking about things that you really didn’t ought to be. Your mind will wander, and your eyes could well play tricks on you. You may be so relaxed while listening to this that you will just want to lie back on your bed and float away into another world. Then all of sudden, in kicks the slightly hardcore influenced screamy vocals. These may take you by suprise at first, but Colin will slowly flow and ebb his way back into the softer, more relaxed mood that you had previously become accustomed to.

Oh yeah, this is something special. I mean you get good albums, and you get good albums. This is a good album of the latter catagory. By the way, that means its better. A lot better. The transitions from the soft melodic emo-rock to the faster paced hardcore-esque stuff just makes this really quite supreme. If I were you, I would order this delibrately, not wait until somebody sends it by mistake, because this is just superb in every respect.
