Cayto - Your Atoms Are Laughing - CD (2003)

If you’re stuck in a dead end job in a drab town, and wondering if the girl who lives across the road from you will ever realise you’re not an ugly sod and ask you out, it tends to be a bit difficult to stomach another person’s self righteousness. Cayto, however, are a band who seem unperturbed by this, and soldier on regardless with seven tracks of politically angsty rock.

“˜Your Atoms Are Laughing’ is a good debut album. Thirty minutes long and seven tracks wide, you could do a lot worse than invest in this. Cayto play a mix of jazz, rock and dance; and while such an eclectic blend might seem messy on paper, it actually flows pretty well on CD.

The songs are all pretty strong. “˜C’mere’ is a weird, but compelling opener, while “˜The Head of a Pin’ would be amazing if not for the “œHolier than thou” approach to song writing, and the pseudo-Trainspotting delivery of lyrics (it sounds just like the “œchoose life” speech). There’s even an attempt at Trail of the Dead thrash on “˜Archimedes,’ and carry it off pretty well. The final track, “˜God is Love,’ is another good song, with ambient singing and a driving rhythm, it’s probably the best track on here.

At only seven tracks, and two of these instrumentals, “˜Your Atoms Are Laughing’ is a little thin on the ground. Cayto are consistently good though on every track, but they don’t reach the heights of amazingness, this will have to wait for album two.
