And here’s another 7″ from the Hidden Chord (ex-OOA, ex-KillSadie, blah blah blah) and it’s the only piece of plastic currently capable of shifting the new Party of Helicopters off of my turntable. Basically it’s two more songs of these guys adept perfection of 60’s rock music, all catchy hooks and fun vocals, blended in with a mere splash of a 90’s post-hardcore influence, as would befit a band with such people in it. A-side, “Identity” is toe tapping and fun, reminiscent in places of stuff like the Kinks, and yeah, it’s good. Even has a little bit of Doors style organ on it. Their more modern sound is audible in the choppy, punkier guitar parts that they layer over the simpler, old style. B-side, “Soundtrack to Murder”, is anything but, though it does show off a knack of playing music that does sounds a great deal more up to date. Bouncy riffage with a DC feel, charged by snotty shoutysung vocals and a big, upbeat, rocking chorus. Grooving.
Not quite as good as the best song of the other 7″ but a good pickup anyway.
Right, that’s it. Was going to do more reviews this evening, but England vs Portugal is on TV. Later!
