Ah, just what the doctor ordered. Another dose of Mates of State. Actually, this here song (“Leave Me At The Tree”) was the one I was taped originally, and therefore the one that led me to make purchases of their records. So, um, it’s another perfect indie pop song from the boygirl duo. Sedately paced, keyed by bubbly keyboards and soft drumming. The boy’n’girl vocals (or “co-ed” as our American chums might ludicrously say) play off each other perfectly, just like they do on your favourite Rainer Maria songs. Pure and simple pop music. Smile when they hold the last note for way too long and Kori chuckles in amusement as the song fades away. This is for the innocent of heart and mind. Absolutely.
Fighter D is the band on the other side. It’s 3 girls doing indie rock. This song does little to grab me. It’s nicely played, kicks off with repetetive riffing a la a bored Promise Ring, and it just kind of bobbles a long from there. Just fails to explode or break out often enough, but when it does it adds a whole lot to the song. Like, solid, but, yeah.
