My Pal Trigger - Lessons In Ancient History - CD (1999)

Labels: Kat
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Strange little package this. A tribute to the recently departed ‘Only Fools And Horses’ star, Roger Lloyd Pack, featuring tracks from Uncle Albert, Boycey, and all your favourites. Of course I jest. If Chris Morris can pretend famous people have died, then so can I. The difference being, Morris is funny, and I am not.

Dear oh dear. I am home alone on a Saturday night, as my housemates are in various parts of the country. And all I am left with is Championship Manager 3 (boast: I lurk in the credits), lots of music, and beer. And who could ask for more? I wish I had more beer.

My Pal Trigger ROCK. Initially on first song “Such The Cynic” they start off doing noodly guitar work, and I predicted they were going to be just another emo rock band. But wait! Here comes the singer. And he sings all hoarsey (neigh) like Blake Schwarzenbach (try spelling that after beer, I probably got it wrong) and the band are playing medium paced emo punk, with the occasional jangle blending well with the more hardcore bashes. Perhaps a bit like the rockin’ At The Drive In. So straight away we are on to a good thing.

And things don’t get worse. They have their poppier, more Get Up Kiddy moments like “In Walks Disaster” where a whinier vocalist takes over. Or maybe it’s the same guy, just doing a different style. Who knows? Not me.

My fave songs on here are “Structure As Sound” which brings back the hoarse vocalist and just plain rocks with a slight Clairmel feel to it, “A Lesson In Ancient History” which drives a long behind a big wall of guitars and is fueled by a little of that early Promise Ring magical powder, and the awesome bonus track – of which I don’t know the name – which has an impecable chiming intro and an overall catchy niceness. Bah, actually, all the songs on here rock, and I forgot to mention “Backseat” which is damn incredible.

Any fan of Snuffy Smile emotional punk rock will dig MPT (which, incidentally, is also an acronym for what me and my friend Dan refer to as: Mobile Phone Twats). Find this. Somewhere. Cheers to Simon for letting me hear this by the way.
