Review #231234124, where I continue to to undermine Collective’s ‘credibility’ (if we ever had any) by buying, reviewing, and liking indie pop records.
There are either two views you can take on this brand of music. Either you find it uncommonly bland and taste free, which often happens in the case of this sort of thing done bad. Or you can just like it a lot, because it sounds so nice. No-one truly hates indie pop with a vehement passion, unless they are cruel, heartless bastards who enjoy running over bunnies in their souped up cars.
2 cuts from the ever confusingly named Spraydog here. “These People” teeters on the edge of the bland but just manages to stay alive. It’s fairly lo-fi, chirpy and fuzzy, maybe a bit in the vein of the likes of Tiger Trap, who someone made me a tape of once. Ta. And it’s fine. Yup.
Play the b-side more often though, as it is more dreamy and more Jejune, which automatically makes it awesome. Very drifting vocals float about, every so often the guitars go all rumbling and ‘rrrrrr’. Hurrah!
There is a sticker on the front of the record sleeve depicting a cartoon of a child with magic powers that enable him (I think its a boy) to create an ice-cream with his mind. There, you now instantly know if this record is for you or not.
