I like bands that put out records that although might not be the best thing I have ever heard, I can quite easily listen to at any time whilst doing something and be happy. The Warren Commission are one of these bands. This album is about 35 minutes of a great mixup of the best in the emo/indie/pop/punk styles.
Tracks like opener “In Kahoots” merrily bounces it’s way a long in quite a noisy fashion with top boy+girl dual vocals, and rub shoulders with much more downbeat, slow, twinkly Jejune pop-athons like “Some Things Don’t Go Away” where Sarah’s vocals just gently float around and make you sit back, shut your eyes and smile. There’s definitely some Promise Ring influence going on with the vibrant rhythms that crop up on some songs, but they aren’t a rip-off band so thats hardly a negative.
Production does let it down in places, stuff like this could do with sounding, well, more ‘perfect’. But I’ll let the Warren Commission off, as otherwise they are a super neat band who are making music for the people who like dreamy indie pop like Jejune AND to have parts that get more rocking like say Texas Is The Reason. Oh boy.
