Review : SID records, home of W.O.R.M., put out this great collection of up and coming UK punk bands. You get awesome tracks from the like of Beauty School Dropout (‘Poison Pen’ – by far the best song on here) and efforts from more established hoodlums l ike Vanilla Pod (‘Pooh Bear’) and Pinto. I was particularly fond of Otherwise – who, Andy informs me, I once saw play. Hmm, I guess I should have paid more attention because they’re pretty good! W.O.R.M. are nice and melodic (‘Come On’ is awesome) and t he Newtown Grunts have that hint of the Dropkick Murphy’s on ‘Bleary Eyed at Victoria’. How To Steal Food and Beaker both caught my attention as did the rocking ‘Kickflip’ whose track ‘When You’re Young’ is a must-have song. Melodic-punk in the best possible incarnation. Sure there’s a couple of duds – but then thats the way of the compilation CD. Seven quid for this lot is a steal and unlike the Fat Wreck sampler – you’ll get plenty of opportunities to go and see these bands play live over the next year or so.
