Various - It's Not Funny Anymore - CD (1999)

Labels: Rabbit
Review by: Russell Opie

This is a comp put together by Australian label “Rabbit Records”. I
picked it up at the gig cos its got lots of songs on it (it should have
30, but in fact only has 27!!!) and lots of bands that I didn’t know so
I figured it would be worth sampling some new material. This is always
hard to do, but here goes with a band-by-band summary anyway :

  • Travis Cut – if you need a taste of exactly how good this bands
new album is, then there are 3 punky poppy tracks on here for you.
  • Mach Pelican – Australian band who do the melodic punk-rock thang.
  • The Impossibles – they play American ska influenced punk quite well.
  • Caustic Soda – another Australian band who have a 7 inch out on
    Crackle. Catchy and loud punk.
  • Tiltwheel – gruff and rough sounding punk rock.
  • Stomach – hey! their songs sound like the bonus tracks that you
get at the end of every Turtlehead CD. Which is cool.
  • Discount – if you read our site regularly and haven’t yet heard
of Discount, what have you been up to? Beautiful emotional punky power-pop
    with female lead vocals.
  • The Fosters – oooh oooh. Male/Female kinda dual fronted punk-pop.
This band definately needs further investigation.
  • Crank – they have a song called “Sheep”. I wonder what that could
    be about?
  • Leadbelly – an unknown to me UK melodic hardcore band. Quite good though.
  • Nancy Vandal – they play mad, nutty and completely insane ska-punk.
  • Meanderthal – here be some more melodic punk.
  • Steeky – it says on the back cover and on the inlay that this band
have three tracks on the comp, but in fact they don’t have any. I’m sure
that they are very good though!
  • Annalise – two cuts from the bands previous EP releases. Annalise
do the melodic hardcore thing as well as any other band.

The more well known bands on here (Travis Cut, Discount, Annalise) are
all great, but they do not contribute exclusive tracks. The other bands
are slightly less impressive, but I would still recommend that you pick this up
if you want to sample some foreign bands, or some relatively unknown home
grown talent.
