Touted as the band that provided the germ (my phrase) for the currently very fertile Florida metalcore scene, Timescape Zero existed in the early nineties and managed to squeeze out this album, which has only just been reissued after some legal bullshit typical of a shitty indie label that thinks they’re good. Fortunately for Timescape Zero, the only real similarity between this lot and bands like Poison The Well seems to be geographical.
Personally, I think Poison The Well and their ilk are shit, with that alternating screamed/sung stuff over too-rigid riffs and rhythms coming across as forced and fake, whereas this is a genuinely angry record. There are some good chunky riffs here, but unfortunately it’s all a bit simplistic, so songs tend to get a bit dull well before they end. The lyrics are the usual overly-earnest fare that is difficult to take seriously
Given that it’s over ten years old, it’s no wonder this thing sounds dated, but then again there are plenty of older records that sound fresh as ever. It also does not sound like Poison The Well, so don’t believe the hype. Not a classic.
