The only other Melt Banana release I own is a weird split 7″ with some German band covering Minor Threat. That 7″ is some weird shit. This 6″ is sort of weird, but it is actually pretty fucking good too, which helps. A cool thing about this band that has nothing to do with reviews is that 4 years ago, my good friend Dan bought a Melt Banana CD once after hearing a 10 second long song on John Peel. Normally Dan does not listen to particularly oddball music, but this song so impressed him that he bought a CD. And he liked it a lot. Last time I spoke to Dan (about a month ago), he says he still puts the CD on to play to people who come round his house, just for kicks.
There are 3 songs on here and “Get the Head Back” is just great! It’s less messy than the other songs on here, consisting of squealing, fucked electronic effects and fast melodies, great punk rock with helium vocals! I just found it really catchy and great fun. It’s over dead quick and it makes me want to play it again. The other 2 songs are less structured and may have been recorded with the sole aim of inducing headaches? “About” is very stop-start and pretty short, it never gets going. The last song is very stuterry, hyper-punk rock mixed with break downs. The fast guitars they have going are great, but they never last long. Good stuff though!
I would have no idea who to recommend this to, but it is good. And “Get the Head Back” is fantastic, like I said earlier. Check it.
