Orrin De Forest - Jazzfinger - split - LP (2002)

Labels: Traqueto
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Wow, I have never heard a UK band do something quite like what Orrin have done here. This is a total obliteration, a manic screamo assault of destructive proportions. It’s Honeywell and Makara, but done by Brits! Shocking behaviour. I only saw these guys once and the live show was rocking. Their drummer (Pete) cut his hand up real band. If that’s not screamo then I don’t know what is! Anyway, amidst the punishing chaos, ODE throw in some brooding jazzy sections, and every now and again some mellower emo parts that sound like Republic of Freedom Fighters. Now that’s cool! The vocals are harsh and screeched, and the recording is extremely ropey, but through it all this shines as a fantastic group of tracks.

I was hoping Jazzfinger would be jazz covers of Badfinger songs, but no. They do an instrumental interspersed with noises and things to fuck you up. This is some eerie stuff, if it had been the soundtrack to Alien vs Predator II then I wouldn’t have dared play it, that game is scary enough as it is! The 2 tracks seems to revolve around what is some regular instruments (a stringed instrument, probably acoustic guitar!) over which is layered some fairly random noise and electronica, not too harsh though, just subtle and not enough to intrude. This is really cool, and I liked it rather a lot. Just not sure how often I would listen to it.

Well, this is an awesome and diverse DIY record for you awesome and diverse DIY folks. Check it out.
