Goodnight Vienna - s/t - CDR (2004)

Labels: self released
Review by: Joe Caithness

Ok let me introduce this band just like they were introduced to me, “a mix of q and not u, city of caterpillar and joy division”. Although this makes sense, this could bring a million and one things into your mind, so I’m gonna try and be a bit more specific in my description.

This band is from Nuneaton, which is in Warwickshire, which is where I live, and my god was I surprised to hear a local band like this. I suppose you would call this post punk/hardcore or something, it’s the kind of thing bands like At the Drive-In started to lean towards before the sound went trendy a year or two ago and they got whipped up and polished. Smooth rhythmic changes, mixing up ultra atonality with pretty melodies and ever changing layers between the bass and guitar. This is the kind of thing that when you listen to it’s amazingly catchy but you can’t work out why because the tunes are just plain wierd.

Their live show is also fantastic, the singer (Kieren) stomps around the stage like a young (and alive) Ian Curtis, while the other chaps jump back and forth shouting the lyrics in the background.

This band would be huge already if they were from the US, if you’re from the Midlands come see Goodnight Vienna, or if they don’t play near you, then book them, they are a very exiting band.

As for these songs getting officially released, the band themselves are not sure at the moment, but lets hope these 3 tunes see wax very soon!
