King Lifting - Habits of Englishmen (Demo) - CD (2004)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

King Lifting (funny ole name that) are based in both Norwich and Leeds, which probably leads (no pun intended) to lots of mileage being clocked

up as they all run around getting together to play their music. I remember seeing them play a couple of months back or so at the Norwich

ferryboat, and they weren’t too bad though sounded like a band very much in the embryonic stages. This demo finds them confidently standing on

their own two feet, with a set of 4 songs that bounce around hectically and rather dis-coordinating manner at times. I can’t say that this is

really the type of music I go nuts for, it’s too tech / metal for my tastes, the vocals are pretty screamo, and there are several different

singers by the sound of it. They roar quite a bit, too, though there is some good spoken stuff in the mix. It definitely fits in with other

Norwich bands like When Ghosts Use Knives or the earlier stuff by the legendary We Close Our Eyes, mixing in the intricate metallic sections with

melodic parts that are easier on the ear. For example there are some nice tuneful parts on the third song that are more like Spy vs Spy.

The music all fits together really nicely and they are definitely good at what they are doing, it’s

just that I am not into technical hardcore. If you are, and you like screamo too, then you should check them out, as you’ll probably be

impressed.
