The Album Leaf - The Outer Banks - 12

Labels: City Slang
Review by: Chris Bress

The Album Leaf used to be just the chap (Jimmy Lavelle) from the awesome Tristeza. Now he’s got a load of mates to help him out (and he’s got onto City Slang). I dunno if what he does is big in America or what but here in the UK you don’t see many of his releases anywhere. The first LP and 7″ were great, especially for the time – but it was hard to track down here. The second full length was a lot easier to get as it was on Tiger Style but there were a lot of releases in between that I have never seen. Now though I hope we’ll be able to get his shit!

This 12″ kicks it off with a pretty straight up poppy electronic beat (like Mum or the Postal Service) and the music behind it is interesting enough to keep me listening but, it’s not great. The second track is a lot nicer even though it’s very typical and doesn’t have too many ideas but I guess the point of it is thats it’s nice and easy on the ears.

The b-side is a slower starter but it’s kind of better for it. The strings and piano chords flow very well with the almost techno beat (low enough in the beat to not disturb your comic reading).

Hopefully these are tracks that didn’t make it onto the forthcoming LP but I like it all the same.
