JR Ewing - Calling In Dead - LP (2001)

Labels: coalition
Review by: Andy Malcolm

I’m not sure what that album title means. Maybe it’s like calling in sick? When you can’t make it into work?

Ring-ring”¦ring-ring”¦

Hello boss, I can’t come to work today. Why’s that? I am dead. I am sorry to hear that, will you be back tomorrow? Probably. Ok, thanks for calling – bye! Bye.

Gosh, this record is a sight when it spins on my turntable. For some reason it has warped. I know not why. It was like that when I got here. And it all spins around on the “˜table, bobbing up and down and lookin’ all weirdo. Doesn’t stop this LP from tearing like fuck though. Because the Ewing are one of the recent breed of smash-mouth European hardcore bands that refuse to play things by the book, bringing the damage and pummelling music right out of your record player.

Splintering the power-emo and crushing hardcore sounds of bands like Envy, Orchid and the Swing Kids, JR Ewing crush it up big time here, from start to finish. No remorse, no relent”¦ bar the occasional break down into brooding expectation where you sit there, waiting for everything to explode again, like that firework you weren’t sure about returning to, lest it go off in your goddamn face. Yet the thumping heaviness of the tracks never gets out of hand, it’s still music that will inspire much running around in rooms, and jumping and raising your fingers in the air and dancing and even moshing too. If you’ve got the hair, maaaaaaaaan. As I sit here now, I am forgetting to type words and describe songs, as a frantically thrash my air drums. The drumming on here is fantastic by the way, never faltering and driving the music ever onwards.

Sure, they fall down, but they get up and whoop your ass before you noticed. Fuckin’ Norway hardcore go!
