Sweetheart - s/t - 7

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Ok, so I was ‘hanging’ with this ‘dude’ called ‘Paul’ from the ‘USA’ and he was ‘saying’ he was

‘putting’ out an EP by ‘this’ band, and ‘I’ had just picked ‘u’p their 7″ myself’. And we were talking

about the fact that he was hoping to put out a split 7″ with them and some band next year on Valentines

Day, the other band happened to have an appropriate name for such an occasion. I don’t know if it was

confirmed or anything so I won’t mention it here cos I might screw something up, plus I have had beers.

So were thinking maybe this release would be done as a heart shaped record, or with a die-cut heart

shaped insert, or on pink vinyl, or some other such nonsense. It was fun to talk about anyway. Also, we watched Badlands. That is one weird movie.

Ok, now that alcohol fueled ramble is over and done with, let me write about this 7″. Apparently

Sweetheart are from Kent, Ohio by the way. That’s where Harriet the Spy was from. I love the song “Am I

Saying ‘Tight’ Too Much”, it has a kind of darkness to the music that Harriet were reknowned for, but

overall is much more melodic, swaying rhythmically in a fashion not too far from Bells on Trike. The

more I listen to it, the more I think it sounds like that. Lots of shouted vocals and driving melodies

that swoop around in a form of controlled chaos. Super good! There is a brilliant break down where the

guy is just crying so much and the guitars are twinkling menacingly somehow. Wow. Then it comes back in

at a breakneck pace with the dude screaming “FUCK THIS TOWN” as the guitars swing back and forth. Ace,

and very emo! The other song is “This Song Is About Arms” and to be honest I wasn’t so into it. I like

the start out, which is sort of like Lovesick. It’s all dark and moody, but then it gets a bit over the

top and screamy. I can take or leave that track personally. The good song, however, makes this 7″

completely worth owning. Or you can just wait until ‘Paul’ puts that EP out and hear more songs by

Sweetheart because it’ll have these 2 tracks on it.
