Young Prayer is a gorgeous summer record, but funnily enough released during our very own brutal October. Like some 60s record you bought from a car boot for the crazy cover and in a world of its own like Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson, Jandek and Tiny Tim this can hardly be lumped in with other music. Panda Bear gently strums his guitar and warbles aimlessly over the top, often it seems, with the two not quite fitting together. Although there is no denying how charming this record is, whether it’s the gorgeous clapping-led hoedown (complete with Wicker Man stomps) at the end of the first side or the otherworldly guitar on track three.
This record proves to be a lot more than Animal Collective tracks not deemed good enough for their next album proper and stands as a way out for people searching the “new weird America” for something truly weird.
