The Knife - Heartbeats - CD (2005)

Labels: Border
Review by: Chris Bress

“œHeartbeats” is a glorious fucking track somewhere inbetween Cyndi Lauper’s “œgood enough”, from the Goonies soundtrack, and a Swedish Junior Boys. It is probably one of catchiest and weirdest pop songs written in ages and it’s just so awesome.

Two weeks ago my girlfriend bought Kate Bush’s “œHounds of love” opus and I got caught up in a drug fuelled dance that I thought only girls could do. “œHeartbeat” conjures up the same ecstatic feelings, it’s just so short and so damn perfect.

The Style of the Eye remix is ok but your not gonna listen to it. The Rex the Dog mix on the flipside is mint though, although probably one of the gayest (in a musical Pet Shop Boys kind of way) tracks I own. It has a raunchy mid tempo beat that kicks off kind of average, but as soon as the vocals kick in it gets you going. The wait for the chorus is like waiting to come up, and when it does it’s just ridiculous, kind of like some Euro-trance if it was good.

I realise this is probably the most ridiculous thing I’ve written and I’m going to have to go and listen to some Negative Approach to redeem my hardcore cred (as if I ever had any).
