Its been a few years since I last heard something new by Dugong, and I was keen to see them
play Norwich last month or so but circumstances intervened and I was elsewhere that evening.
But here they are with their new cdep of 6 songs that spin past in 17 and a half minutes.
Musically they are fairly similar to the band I remember, playing energetic and melodic
indie rockage, but the vocals sometimes sound really different (maybe its a new guy), and
are kind of putting me off to be honest. For example on the first track “Quick to the City”
the singer is all warbly and high-pitched at certain points, like he was in Muse or
something like that. What? Not my thing at all. The band redeem themselves with the standout
track, the sub 2 minute punkage of “Gravedancer”, with flying guitars and tight rhythms. Its
followed by the bubbly indie-rocker, “Trojan Horse” that has a great bassline driving it
along – good stuff. And thats how they mix the style over the rest of this CD. A bit of the fast and a bit of the more indie. Overall its pretty solid stuff, but it never really grabbed my attention like the Eastmoor Rules cd did way back when. Still, I think if you have been keeping up with the band over the years then you’ll more than likely be happy with this.
