November 13th were a band which just happened to come over to the UK from Germany. I didn’t know much about them, just had an mp3, and managed to score a date with them on tour. Thank fuck we did! November 13th absolutely friggin blew me away live, so much that I got so excited I bought 9 LPs from their distro, their self titled lp being one of them!
Lets get one thing straight, the whole epic crust thing is pretty popular right now, right? Soon kids will be saying “god why does everyone rip off Tragedy these days, its so passe”, but I say either way fuck it, because November 13th do this style as good as if not better than their contemparies.
The songwriting is spot on. Very few bands of this style seem to rely on one guitar, but these guys do and sound just as impacting without having to rely on any trickery in the studio. I really like the way this band are very up front and punk in every way but are obviously really talented musicans and arn’t afraid to use it to their advantage. They throw all kinds of different influences into this record and are very subtle about it, some of the intros are plain punishing metal, sometimes they are reminiscent of old german emo bands like Assay and Age and sometimes its just a full on scandinavian style raw dbeat fury: it really gets my blood boiling over!
I really hope these guys come back over again soon and maybe a few more kids will turn up and really enjoy this, because this band are one of my favourite current tips for leaving a mark on the scene.
