Hablan Por La Espalda - Tidal - A Fistful Of Rock - 10

Labels: Cecilesque

Hablan Por La Espalda! The giants of Uruguayan hardcore punk. Or something. Its been a while since I heard their LP. Anyways, they give us four songs on this split recordage, playing a fairly rocking set of relatively straightforward punk tunes with some rock and roll moments. This is not really that good, it doesn’t really have much impact on me unfortunately, but it generally isn’t awful (apart from the third song). There are some cheesey parts on here that rather diminish its appeal for me. Nowt special.

Flip this over for Tidal, and this sounds really different to when I last heard them, a few years ago they were very screamotional, and this is nothing like that, with sung vocals, a sax and a very different direction, playing melodic indie rock and then just now on the first song they threw in a little group chorus like something off a Defiance Ohio record. Puzzling! Following on from that is a sassy little poppy track, nice and catchy. Then there is a song that goes “Hey! May I introduce myself, I am a squirrel”, then the second verse is sung in French. These guys are German. Very perplexing. Well, Tidal manage to successfully keep me completely off balance, and in a good way. I enjoyed Tidal’s songs, even though they bewildered me.
