Carry Vs Sabse - Carry Vs Sabse - CD (2009)

Labels: Moment of Collapse
Review by: Oli Saunders

Folk music is something that I have become pretty passionate about in recent times. There’s a lot of it about, much of it quite samey and mediocre let’s be honest. Okay so you could say the same for most non niche genres of music but folk has an abundance of it. The pick of the bunch though really strike a chord in my soul, artists like Jackson C. Frank and Vashti Bunyan just absolutely blow me away, words escape me as to describe how good they are. I love the simplicity of the setup, just an acoustic guitar and a voice, but creating some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Lyrics are pretty important too and the two aforementioned artists completely nail these too.

Carry Vs. Sabse are a female duo playing this style of music. Sabse plays guitar and Carry sings, Sabse also plays a few other instruments on the recording. It’s pretty decent stuff, the guitar has a reasonable amount of variance and Carry has a good voice. It’s fairly melancholic in nature which I like, I do find the songs are a bit too ballad like in nature for my tastes, her vocals have quite a pop feeling to them. The tracks are generally about depression, there is a hell of singing about crying. Fair enough though.

The songs are a bit samey in places but its all pretty solid – would have to say that whilst not being spectacular at any point there are also no bad tracks. ‘Once Again’ stand outs from the rest perhaps, I’m fond of this. Overall I like the lo-fi nature throughout and it’s a nice effort – 10 songs in 28 minutes.
