Labels: Moment of Collapse – Sadness of Noise
Review by: Oli Saunders
Captain, Your Ship Is Sinking play drawn out atmospheric screamo which lies somewhere between bands like fairly early Envy, Gantz, Aussitôt Mort and the many post-rock esque screamo bands that have materialised recently. Many moments of ambience, the instruments rarely get that heavy. Over the top there are deep and hoarse screams, which distinguishes them from a lot of bands playing this style. It makes the music quite dark and depressing, kind of black metalish in parts really.
I tend to not be that impressed with music of this type anymore, I got bored of Envy and Gantz to be honest and sold the records of theirs that I had. But after a few listens this record has grown on me, I imagine it’s something I’ll pull out now and again to play. The instrumental parts are nice enough and on occasion there are some really cool riffs where everything gets going and the vocals join in – the thing is that this is expected trick that epic screamo always does, making it a little predictable, but it does work pretty well here.
The first three songs are nice enough though not outstanding. The best track by far for me is definitely the last one, ‘Noah, Build Me And Ark’. Things definitely get more intense here and it sounds like Marat playing a longer song than usual, which is a very good thing indeed as that band blow me away. CYSIS are due to put songs on the second Moment Of Collapse ‘Connections’ record and I’d be very pleased if they write some more tracks like this. Overall, solid with some highlights and the last track I’ve decided is pretty killer.
