Labels: Thrillhouse
Review by: Andy Malcolm
By rights I should hate this LP. It’s indiesy, folksy, countrysy, punksy, the kind of thing that maybe Plan-it-x would put out and I would sneer like a bitter fucking jaded old bastard. But that’s too bad. As this LP is super! Songs for Moms are the kind of goofy, sloppy, DIY band that I can’t help but fall in love with. The element of cheese is ploughed through by a giant combine harvester of goodness. Perhaps in the hands of a bunch of self aware dudes, these songs would struggle to breathe, drowning in a sea of drear, but when offered up by three lasses who just seem to be having such a good time making a fun LP, things are different. There generally lies the difference between music made by males and females. And I may be about to make quite a brazen statement, but so much male music is forced, a desperate attempt to fit into narrow confines of influences, whilst bands which have a majority of females in just get the fuck on with it and make music for the sheer overwhelming joy of it. Am I wrong / right? That’s a gut feeling statement right there. Anyway, that is what comes out of this LP the most, Songs for Moms clearly have a blast being in this band, had a blast making this LP, and I have a blast listening to it. I am not going to dwell on this any more, not disect any tunes, not compare it to any specific band, not deride it for any irrelevant reason – this LP is awesome. Thrillhouse put out great records. That’s all I got. I wish this website had comments on reviews then me and a bunch of dudes could pointlessly analyse and disect my review full of wild and ill thought out commentary on the male / female musical divide. Am I being patronising or am I telling it like it is? I hope you don’t really give that much of a shit, but you can always write me a letter at the Collective Zine address instead.
