Frivolvol - Blades of Steel - CD (2009)

Labels: More Than Sounds – Rabbit Ilsn Records
Review by: Danny Parsons

I’m not sure what I was expecting from this release as I had never heard of this band before, or indeed, heard the music that they play. I think the first track is a bit misleading “” it’s a quite upbeat, melodic instrumental piece whereas the rest of the album seems to be veering more toward the “˜post-hardcore’ side of things. This is the sort of post-hardcore that is tainted by the whole delay pedal, post-rock wankery though and I really wish they’d cut it out as the songs that don’t have this stuff in are far superior. All in all this is a fairly enjoyable album; not one that I’m going to revisit much but a good effort nonetheless. It’s much of the same sound throughout but it’s done in an entirely listenable fashion, although I have to say that the vocals grate slightly on my ears now and then “” they’re really high at times. Oh, and the last track is another instrumental track of an entirely different nature “” kinda ambient stuff. Weird. If you happen to be a connoisseur of Finnish postcore then this might be your bag.
