Quantis is a physical random number generator exploiting an elementary quantum optics process. It is also one of my favorite Reversal Of Man songs. And now, it is a Malaysian screamo band. The name probably influenced by the latter rather than a love for quantum physics, the music definitely in these realms.
Things start gently with the sound of water running and the music fading in. It’s then recognisably Malaysian screamo and damn it’s good. You know the deal by now, quick fire songs, rushed screamed and difficult to decipher vocals, guitars cycling through chords. Noticeably the guitars don’t get incredibly heavy but they provide great melody and go well in time with the vocals. Of course this is often the way in modern screamo but it is something I never seem to tire of. Things are pretty intense for the most part, though there are moments when things quieten down. The band fit into the Malaysian sound nicely; out of all bands from this region that I’ve heard I’d say their sound is closest to Jose Phine – no bad thing.
Track three ‘Please, Always And Thank You’ is probably my favorite as its structure is a little different. All four tracks are really solid though. In any case, you probably know simply from reading the abstract of this review whether it’s going to be to your tastes or not. A final note is the awesome decorated fabric envelope that this tape comes in – this kind of thing is what makes demos so great. Overall it’s been a few years since I stumbled across Malaysian screamo, shortly after Utarid’s demise I think, and I am still very much a fan of them and the decent number of bands who have formed (and broken up) since then.
