I do like a nice ramshackle demo. Wendy is very ramshackle. 4 kids in a little room, banging away at their instruments, attempting to be even more lo-fi than those early Cap’n Jazz recordings. This is simple, bouncy indie / emo, with a little keyboard thrown in. It’s catchy and fun, bridging the gap between Cap’n Jazz and early Promise Ring quite nicely, but upping the pop quotient even more so. “Hey TV” sounds like it’s going to be a cover of the late Michael Jackson’s “ABC” mind you. I definitely like the combination of male+female vocals, being a bit yelpy and youthful. The song structures are ever so simple, but in a good way – this means they don’t get bogged down in a world of twiddle, and regular readers of my outpourings will know I consider that a good thing. Four tracks of this endearingly basic stuff is about right, it would perhaps start to weigh a bit to have to listen to too much more, although I have listened to it back to back a couple of times as it is so pleasant.
There’s plenty to be moving forward with here, but it’ll be interesting to hear what they do with this sound as it’s very easy to mess it all up. Enjoyable beginnings.
