Outer Limits was my favourite song of 2010 long before this 7″ turned up on my doorstep, the label having posted it for download several weeks prior at the height of summer. A sensible decision on their part, Outer Limits has long since bound itself to my conscious as I recall hot days or a humid evening being hypnotised by this song whilst wandering home eating an ice cream. It is such a belter of a song, but my record player seems to expose the vinyl a tiny bit, the compressed mp3 hiding some of the imperfections that are present in the recording maybe. Or maybe it’s just that the weather is shit now, or my stylus needs replacing. Either way, this is still my favourite song of 2010. A million and one bands try to embody the summer, but this song does it best. Over the top of a barely changing drum beat, Sleep Over echo out, the vocals drifting in and out over soft synths (or whatever it is, you can’t really tell). It feels like wasted days and lost daydreams. It conjures up a lot of feelings for me really, but I am not going to write them all down as this isn’t fucking live journal.
Over on the flip is La Rose which kicks in sounding warped and off-key, before hitting it’s stride perfectly. More of those simple, echoing drums and ethereal vocals. Another song that just feels so lost and sad as it slips along at an almost glacial pace. It’s a real delight, a perfect slow burner, an effortless grower of a track that will stay with you long past the needle getting stuck in the run out groove.
This is sold out or some shit already, so simply go and download it. Stupid labels and their limited expensive pressings of things that people actually want to buy.
